Men’s hockey wins national title

The Green Knights clinched their second consecutive NCAA Division III men’s hockey title on March 17 with a 4-1 win over the Oswego State Lakers in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The college community celebrated the win on the unseasonably warm afternoon of March 22, ringing Baer Mall to hear from players, coaches and staff. The national championship is the college’s third in five years, and only two other programs in tournament history have repeated as champions.

The final game went the Green Knights’ way from the very start when forward Cody Keefer ’13, taking to the ice in his third NCAA tourney, scored after just 17 seconds of play. After the Lakers tied it up, Brandon Hoogenboom ’14 found twine at 17:29 in the first period to take the Green Knights up 2-1.

Then Keefer scored once each in the second and third periods. His hat trick secured a St. Norbert win and prompted coverage of his exceptional play on the NCAA website.

Goaltender David Jacobson ’15 tallied 29 saves in the championship game, including all 14 shots he faced in the second period. Overall, he made 55 saves in the Frozen Four to be named the semifinals’ Most Outstanding Player.

Green Knights also earned four of six spots on the all-tournament team. Those recognized include Jacobson, Keefer, Johan Ryd ’12 and Zach McDonald ’14.

Following the win, U.S. College Hockey Online named Tim Coghlin its NCAA Division III Coach of the Year, his second consecutive honor from the organization. The website also dubbed Jacobson its Rookie of the Year.

The team finished the season 21-5-5, going 14-1-1 in its last 16 games. St. Norbert has won 13 of its last 14 NCAA tournament games.

Mark your calendars for next season's home opener against Concordia University, when the championship banner will be raised at Cornerstone Ice Arena in De Pere. The game takes place Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
