Two unique new academic partnerships offer further opportunity for St. Norbert students

A new engineering partnership between St. Norbert and Michigan Tech starts this fall.

The agreement gives students the opportunity to take pre-engineering courses at St. Norbert for two years before undertaking a transitional summer period at Michigan Tech. Typically, they will take two to three courses over that summer that will prepare them for their two final years of coursework at the Houghton, Mich., school.

The academic partnership encompasses the following majors:

Chemical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Material Science Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Biomedical Engineering
Environmental Engineering
Geological Engineering (this discipline requires two summers of coursework)

These opportunities mean more options for students interested in engineering. Those who particularly value a liberal arts foundation can benefit from that experience and still complete their engineering degree in four years.

“This will represent a marriage of two very strong institutions in preparing future engineers who have both a firm foundation in the liberal arts and in a specific engineering major,” said Michael Marsden, dean of the college and academic vice president at St. Norbert.

“St. Norbert College plans to utilize professional engineers from the greater Green Bay area to offer several key pre-engineering courses, in addition to existing strong courses in science and mathematics, to prepare students for the transition.”

Articulation agreement eases transfers to St. Norbert
St. Norbert College and Bay de Noc Community College, based in Escanaba and Iron Mountain, Mich., have also established an articulation agreement that begins in the fall of 2009.

The agreement states that students who begin their studies at Bay de Noc Community College and follow a defined program of study there will experience a seamless transfer to St. Norbert College.

The programs of study which offer transferability of credits are accounting; art; biology with biomedical concentration; biology with organismal biology concentration; business administration; communication and media studies; economics; environmental science; general studies; mathematics; political science; psychology; sociology; and sociology with human services concentration.

St. Norbert also has partnerships with Bellin College of Nursing, Marquette University and UW Oshkosh.
