Old friends, music and poetry: a great mix for summer

St. Norbert College Magazine editor Susan Allen reviews web exclusives and brings readers up to date on stories covered in the summer issue, out this week.

Friendship, happiness and campus memories went into the making of the new issue of the college magazine, and the web exclusives in our online issue allow you to experience all three.

The theology of friendship is a particular research interest of Paul Wadell (Religious Studies). After working with him on the compelling article that he contributed to this issue, it was a joy to tape a conversation between Wadell and his friend Howard Ebert ’74 (Religious Studies). A good friend is someone to share with others, the two men agree. They spoke, for our cameras, about ways their own friendship enriches their lives.

We found some old friends for you to reconnect with when we tracked down this year’s retiring professors in their offices. How many of our readers must have studied under Jim Benton (Sociology), Jim Hodgson (Biology) and Donald Taylor ’68 (Art). It is moving to hear them speak about what they take from their long tenure at St. Norbert.

More for summer
As soon as we fixed on simple pleasures as the theme for our summer issue, we knew it would be a fun publication to produce. The online issue is full of good things for July: some poems from Laurie MacDiarmid (English): organ music from the Rev. Bartholomew Agar, O.Praem., ’55 (Music, Emeritus); and a consideration of happiness by Leanne Kent (Philosophy).

Revisit your college experience by enjoying, with us, “32 Reasons Why It’s Good to Be Here.” Reason No. 1, of course, is that we’re the only Norbertine institution of higher education in the world, and we’re happy to bring you the first article of an occasional series on our Norbertine heritage: “History in a Bottle,” a look at beers brewed by Norbertine abbeys.

More to enjoy
The online magazine allows us to offer more for readers who want to go deeper into topics that pique their interest in the print magazine. This issue’s web extras also include a video interview with Dave Wegge (Political Science) about the evolution of the St. Norbert College Strategic Research Institute; a photo gallery of Commencement, with words from this year’s speaker, author David Maraniss; and a closer look at the collaborative art installation by Brian Pirman (Art) and Leivur Djurhuus ’12.

More from our readers
While we were compiling Alumni Notes, we were saddened to note the death of Jeanne Pischke ’57. Pishke’s story appeared in our Summer 2010 issue, along with those of two other early women graduates of the college who spoke on campus last year.

In happier news, we celebrate with Chelsea (Buchman) Budde ’95, whose autism awareness and peer acceptance video “Choosing to be a GFF (Good Friend Forever)” received the Autism Society’s national award for media excellence for video, print or news. Budde’s story of life with her son Justus ran in Summer 2009.
