The hungry Pack is back
The Green Bay Packers decided to renew their dinner reservations at St. Norbert College.
The Pack’s players and coaches stay in residence halls on campus for the first three weeks of summer training camp, but all meetings and meals during the day were to take place at Lambeau Field this year due, in large part, to the new practice schedule implemented by new head coach Mike McCarthy.
But the players spoke and Monday, Aug. 7, the Packers returned to St. Norbert for dinner, as well as enjoyed the continental breakfast and late-night snack the College provided.
Small potatoes? Not for these guys. In fact, USA Today picked up the story after starting middle linebacker Nick Barnett told the paper, “I kind of like St. Norbert food a little bit better. I wish we could eat over there again. They had steak and lobster on the first day. All we have (at the stadium) is spaghetti.”
Barnett got his wish. Every day through the remainder of camp, with the exception of when the team traveled for a pre-season game, they had dinner at St. Norbert.
Coach Mike McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “I probably acted a little hastily with the traditions and the way they did things over there. That was one of the things that everybody enjoyed and I probably overlooked it when I set up the schedule.”
The difficult part for the College was trying to hire back the many high school and college students who have helped out in the dining room during previous camps, explained Matthew Doyle (Dining Services). “We called the students to see if they were still available to work. We’re confident we were able to meet the needs of the Packers.”
The chefs were excited at the prospect of feeding America’s team once more, Doyle added. “There was a sense of pride that the Packer players wanted to come back for the food at St. Norbert College.”
St. Norbert College hosted the Packers annual summer training camp for the 49th year, the longest relationship of its kind between an NFL team and a college.
