Alumni office welcomes new interim director

“I grew up on the campus.”

And when Todd Danen, St. Norbert College’s new acting director of alumni and parent relations says that, it isn’t hyperbole. He grew up in a house on Stewart Street, across from what is now the Schuldes Sports Center.

“As a child, I played on this campus,” said Danen, 53, a graduate of the former Abbot Pennings High School, now the St. Norbert College Pennings Activity Center.

Danen (pronounced DAY-nen) joined the alumni office staff June 30 to work for a transitional one-year term pending a permanent appointment. But make no bones about it—Danen plans on doing more than just “acting” the role.

His current role involves planning and implementing activities for alumni and parents of St. Norbert students. Creating those links between generations is imperative, Danen believes. “Alumni become the foundation of a college; they’re also the history of the college, which is important for development as well,” he said. “We certainly want to create an environment where alumni feel part of the college.”

Danen comes to St. Norbert after a two-year stint as development and grants manager at Rawhide Boys Ranch. His past experience also includes teaching middle school special education.

But clearly, the De Pere native is thrilled to be back at his old stomping grounds. Danen attended St. Norbert for two years (1974-76), and later received his degree in English literature from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. His wife, Anne (Vandeveld), graduated from St. Norbert in 1982 with an art degree; today, the couple is raising two sons, Patrick, 9, and Sean, 3.

From his memories kicking the ball across Stewart Street to his current vantage point from the alumni house, Danen’s world seems to have come full circle. And, to him, there’s no place like home—“This is where I belong,” he says.
