Alums find themselves collaborating as college faculty partners

Casey Barrio ’00 walked into her interview for the University of North Texas’ graduate counseling program “nervous as can be,” she says.

Then Dennis Engels ’64, a professor at North Texas since 1976, smiled and asked, “So, how did you like De Pere?”

The question immediately put Barrio at ease.

“It was evident that Casey would make a wonderful member of our program faculty,” Engels says.

Engels and Barrio are colleagues in the University of North Texas’ prestigious graduate counseling program. U.S. News & World Report ranks the nationally accredited program 12th out of 500 in the nation.

Though Engels’ specialties are career counseling and ethics in counseling, while Barrio’s are crisis counseling, multicultural counseling and counselor education, the two have collaborated on numerous projects.

“In the six years we’ve worked together, Dr. Engels took a special interest in supporting and mentoring me,” says Barrio.

One of their most recent projects was the fourth edition of the 30-year landmark book “The Professional Counselor: Portfolio, Competencies, Performance Guidelines, and Assessment.” Engels and Barrio are first and second authors and editors of the book, which received the 2010 Publication Award of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision.

“SNC has been a very strong bonding aspect for us, and I sense in Casey some of the wonderful energy and dedication to advancing humanity that I cherish from SNC,” says Engels.

Barrio adds: “We both believe strongly in human dignity and potential, and we both enjoy the process of learning and discovery. I believe SNC helped to foster these beliefs and our dedication to our service profession.”

Engels’ recent retirement may change the alums’ relationship, but is unlikely to end it.

“I will continue to seek ways to advocate for our counseling program, and I will always be available for any assistance Casey needs,” says Engels.

Barrio says, “[Engels] was instrumental in shaping the development and stature of our program, and his legacy will continue long after his retirement.”
