Student dressed for success

The correct attire and the correct demeanor build confidence for a successful job search.

Professional training gives students a head start in job search

Graduating students will be in good shape as they begin their job search, thanks in part to a “Professional Triathlon” offered later this month.

The Oct. 17 event will give students the chance to practice networking with local employers; enjoy a three-course meal while learning proper dining etiquette from a professional presenter; and, during dessert, watch a student fashion show presented by The Limited and Jos. A. Bank.

The triathlon is the latest in a well-rounded fall-semester series of programs that has also prepared students for:

  • Internship success (Get Real: Intern!, a workshop offering tips and tools for finding and securing internships).
  • Deciding on a field of study (Majorfest. Read more at Major decision requires Major Fest).
  • Careers in public accounting (an informal open house hosted by local accounting company Schenck).

Programming kicked off Sept. 18 with a Fall Career and Internship Fair. An established spring fair on campus already draws representatives from many local employers. This additional touchpoint earlier in the school year was offered in response to their requests. Some 47 employers took part in this first-ever fall offering.

A professional touch
Erica DeQuaine (Career Services), who organized the Professional Triathlon, says students benefit from the chance to gain confidence in handling networking events:

“Right now with the competitiveness in the market our students really need to stand out in all aspects of working with an employer. That’s not just interviewing, that’s also networking at an event – and if they are invited to a dining function, they need to have those great table manners and look their best.

“We’ve invited 11 different employers from varying industries. It’ll be a fun two-hour event that we’re really excited about.”

DeQuaine’s team staged the event carefully to replicate an authentic professional ambiance, working closely with Catering Services to create an elegant three-course meal and even bringing in a professional speaker on etiquette from Milwaukee.
