Santa brings families back to campus

A campus Christmas tradition that brings families back to campus will also be offered to alumni in the Chicago area for the first time this year.

Breakfast with Santa, now entering its fourth year, has proved such a success with St. Norbert alums that a parallel event will be held at the Itasca Country Club this year.

Each year the program includes Christmas carols and craft activities that range anywhere from face painting to gingerbread houses, and the very popular frosting of cookies. “We try to spice it up each year,” says Chris Betcher (Alumni and Parent Relations).

But Santa seems to be the real showstopper. Jessica Schmechel ’98 (Residential Education and Housing), who has attended Breakfast with Santa with her family each year since it started, says, “Last year Santa knew some of the children’s names and called them out as they were walking into the event. My son Ian’s name was called along with something that he wanted for Christmas. His eyes got so large and he was so excited as Santa came up to him and gave him a special hello.”

Ragan Jorgensen ’97 says that when Santa called her daughter Jillian’s name, “her eyes doubled in size and she would not look up at him. She was so well behaved for the next few weeks!”

Breakfast with Santa is “one of those events that sells itself,” says Betcher. It is an intern-driven event that would not be possible without the help of student-alumni ambassadors, or without the positive responses from families.

“The best part of the event is the fact that we can all enjoy it together as a family,” says Jorgensen. Schmechel agrees, saying Breakfast with Santa seems to really have become a tradition for her family and many others.

Registration for Breakfast with Santa is now open. For more information on the event, visit the Alumni and Parent Relations web site.
