O Christmas tree … !

The Green Bay Packers will celebrate the season under a Christmas tree presented to their organization by St. Norbert College.

Thanks to Cathie Puyleart (Campus Ministry), the large tree that grew outside her old office at 402 Third Street will take center stage at Lambeau Field during the Christmas season. The tree was scheduled to be removed before excavations begin at the site of the new Mulva Library on campus.

Puyleart’s creative suggestion earns seats for herself and her husband at the Packers’ Dec. 9 game against the Oakland Raiders. It’s been a while since the couple saw a game at Lambeau—their last attendance was at the Ice Bowl! The Puylearts went to the legendary game just a couple of weeks after their Dec. 16, 1967, wedding in Old St. Joseph Church.

The Green Bay Packers were looking for a “magnificent” 35-to-45 foot evergreen tree to be used at Lambeau Field for their upcoming Festival of Lights. Members of the area community were encouraged to submit proposals detailing why their tree should be chosen.

Puyleart’s proposal said that, by choosing this tree, the Packers would honor both the college and Father Jim Baraniak, O.Praem. The Packers’ chaplain, Baraniak looked upon this tree for many years from his office window.

The tree was harvested yesterday and transported to Lambeau Field under police escort. There, it is being decorated in readiness for the Packers’ Festival of Lights this Saturday, Dec. 8, 5:00-7:00 p.m. This family-themed event, free to the public, will feature music, choirs, reindeer and Santa Claus, and will culminate at 6:30 p.m. with the spectacular illumination of the holiday tree, decorated with more than 10,000 lights.

Original plans to transplant the tree proved impractical. Puyleart’s winning submission spoke for the tree, saying:

“Let me shine one last time at the Festival of Lights in all my majesty! My fate is one of darkness as the college will soon be excavating for the Mulva Library where I reside. I have captured the eyes of many, especially during Advent and Christmas when I shine adorned in a brilliance of lights. … Many have viewed me through [Campus Ministry’s] office window. By choosing me, you will honor the college, your chaplain, Fr. James Baraniak, O.Praem., and the entire college community. Please, let me shine at Lambeau.”
