lisa.gray@snc.eduGrants The best kind of college financial aid is the kind you don’t have to repay. Grants are funds offered based on student financial need. College grants help offset the cost of school for students who might not otherwise be able to attend due to financial constraints.
This institutionally funded grant is awarded to full-time undergraduate degree-seeking students with financial need who don’t receive enough grant assistance from other sources. Students must submit a FAFSA each year in order to be considered, and the amount of money awarded is determined by the student’s financial need. Amount varies each year depending on need.
Consider the following federal grants when planning your aid:
Wisconsin offers several grant programs to support higher education:
Loans Federal student loans provide affordable funding options to help you invest in your education, including subsidized and unsubsidized Direct Loans, PLUS Loans and private loans for additional costs. St. Norbert College offers resources like loan counseling and repayment guidance to support you throughout your academic journey and beyond.
Federal Direct Loans are low-interest loans designed to help you pay for college. To qualify, you must be enrolled in at least six undergraduate credits or three graduate credits per semester. There are two types:
-
Subsidized Loans are based on financial need, and the federal government pays the interest while you're enrolled at least half time.
-
Unsubsidized Loans are available regardless of financial need, but interest begins accruing while you're in school.
Loan amounts vary based on your academic year and dependency status (as determined by the FAFSA):
-
Dependent students may borrow up to $31,000 total, with annual limits of:
- $5,500 as a freshman (up to $3,500 subsidized)
- $6,500 as a sophomore (up to $4,500 subsidized)
- $7,500 as a junior or senior (up to $5,500 subsidized)
-
Independent students may borrow up to $57,500 total, with annual limits of:
- $9,500 as a freshman (up to $3,500 subsidized)
- $10,500 as a sophomore (up to $4,500 subsidized)
- $12,500 as a junior or senior (up to $5,500 subsidized)
- Graduate students may borrow up to $20,500 annually in unsubsidized loans.
First-time borrowers at St. Norbert College must complete Entrance Loan Counseling and a Master Promissory Note online before receiving funds.
PLUS Loans are available to help cover additional education costs:-
Parent PLUS Loans allow parents of dependent students to borrow funds. These are credit-based and require an online application and Master Promissory Note.
-
Graduate PLUS Loans are available to graduate students and also require a credit check, application, and Master Promissory Note.
If your financial aid does not fully cover your college expenses, private student loans may be an option to help bridge the gap. These loans are offered by banks and other private lenders and are not part of federal loan programs.
Before applying, we recommend speaking with a St. Norbert College financial aid counselor to make sure you have explored all available aid options and understand how private loans fit into your overall financial plan.Entrance counseling
Before receiving your first Federal Direct Loan at St. Norbert College, you’ll need to complete entrance counseling. This online session helps you understand the terms of your loan and your responsibilities as a borrower.Exit counseling
When you graduate, withdraw or drop below half-time enrollment, you’ll be required to complete exit counseling. This session provides important information about managing your loans after college.Loan repayment
