Criterion Four: Acquiring, Creating, and Applying Knowledge

The organization promotes a life of learning for its faculty, administration, staff, and students by fostering and supporting inquiry, creativity, practice, and social responsibility in ways consistent with its mission.

The SNC Mission Statement attests to the value placed by the College on a life of learning,Specifically, it states that the College is "committed to providing an educational environment that is intellectually, spiritually, and personally challenging." It goes to say that "students will develop skills in critical and analytical thought, quantification, synthesis, problem-solving, and communication, and will learn to apply these as responsible citizens of a diverse, interdependent, and changing world." Finally, our mission states "We kembrace the liberal arts tradition challening students to excel in academic learning characterized by honesty and integrity for their chosen profession and personal lives. All three statements (but the last one especially) demonstrate the College's commitment to alife of learning.

In support of the mission, the academic year begins with a new student convocation (in which the faculty participate in academic attire) that emphasizes the centraliy of academic learning. The Student Life Competencies provide a detailed vision of what the College expects in the realm of personal development. Faculty, administration and staff model life-long learningthrough faculty and staff development programs, attendance at professional conferences, public presentations, book discussions, renewal programs and retreats focused on vocation, and periodic sabbaticals. A tuition waiver policy allows faculty and staff to enroll in College courses without paying tuition and a commitment to life-long learning is exemplified by the Alumni College. The College displays and celebrates the scholarly work of faculty, staff, and students. Sustained scholarship is an expectation for promotion. The College publicly recognizes faculty who are exemplary teachers and scholars, as well as students who have achieved. The Administratie Internship in Academic Affairs promotes leadership and the development of administratie skills within the community.
