SNC Parents Facebook Group Is a Hit

The new St. Norbert College Parents Group recently went live on Facebook and already has more than 650 members. The group, moderated by several SNC parents, is open to parents of current and future St. Norbert students. Its quick success is testimony to the fact that SNC parents like to help one another out, whether it’s giving advice on where to stay and dine when you visit campus or thoughts on which meal plan may be best for juniors and seniors.

“I think there will be a lot of moving-in questions coming up,” says moderator Tonya Lemens, parent of Tyler Lemens ’19, Jonathan Lemens ’21 and Ashley Lemens ’24. “I know I will have lots, because I have never moved in a girl before.”

As with other Facebook groups, just submit a request to join or have a member issue you an invitation, then answer some security questions. One of the group moderators typically responds within 24 hours, and Lemens says it’s sometimes within minutes.

Parents of incoming first-year students are invited to post their student’s high school senior photo, then tell a little bit about them. The moderators regularly post conversation-starters, too. Lemens recently posted an explanation regarding how housing works, for example. An extra perk: Some SNC faculty members who are parents of incoming students are part of the Facebook group, too.

While the main purpose of the group is for parents to interact with one another, the ensuing conversations also help the college learn what’s on parents’ minds. Nick Meisner (Communications) says one recent discussion was about the possibility of creating congratulatory yard signs for graduating seniors, who won’t have the typical SNC Commencement experience. College officials liked that idea, so SNC’s design team quickly got to work. Now, customized celebratory yard signs are available for purchase.

In addition to the new Facebook group, St. Norbert still operates its St. Norbert College Parents Facebook page. This is the spot where college officials post information and announcements about topics such as advisement, orientation, bookstore gift sales and more.
