Advice for writers
After you finish a piece of writing, read it out loud. Reading it to another person is best, but if you feel self-conscious (and trust me, you're not alone) then even muttering it under your breath is enormously beneficial. It is guaranteed to help you catch grammar mistakes, typos, and improve your sentence fluency.

How do you get started on a writing assignment?
Bomb. Countdown. It sounds strange, but it actually helps. Go to Google, search "stopwatch," and find the site's Bomb Countdown. It gives you this odd adrenalin rush, and you feel compelled to try to write as much as you can before the bomb explodes. I find using it in ten to thirty minute intervals is optimal.
