Green Knights Shut Down Pioneers

DE PERE - St. Norbert College held Grinnell College to 27.5 percent shooting from the floor and topped the Pioneers 58-38 in a Midwest Conference game on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (7-1, 4-0 MWC), ranked No. 22 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, improved to 32-0 all-time in the series with Grinnell (2-6, 2-3).

St. Norbert went on a decisive 14-0 run midway through the first half to take control. The Green Knights held a 10-7 lead before Stephanie Weigman and Tasha Giese scored 34 seconds apart to lead 14-7. Brianna Byrne followed with a 3-pointer, and then finished a layup at 9:06 for a 19-7 edge. Byrne scored again, and Weigman converted a conventional three-point play at the 7:08 mark for a 24-7 lead. St. Norbert settled for a 28-14 lead at halftime.

Byrne hit a basket 14 seconds into the second half, and the Green Knights never trailed by less than 15 points the rest of the game. St. Norbert led 37-22 with 13:39 to go, but a Weigman 3-pointer started a 9-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Byrne led St. Norbert with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Weigman came off the bench to registered 12 points and six rebounds. Heidi Van Sistine added eight points and six rebounds. The Green Knights shot 42.1 percent (24-for-57) from the floor.

Sophia Gatton was the only Grinnell player to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points. Alex Neckopulous finished with nine points and 14 rebounds. The Pioneers converted just 14 of 51 field-goal attempts.
