LAKE FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College couldn't hold a late lead and saw its hopes for a Midwest Conference championship dashed in a 5-4 loss to Lake Forest College at Farwell Field.

The Green Knights (11-5-2, 8-2 MWC) needed a win over the Foresters (14-2-2, 9-0-1) to claim the league title for the second time in three years. St. Norbert led 4-2 midway through the second half and still held a 4-3 edge with six minutes to go.

Lake Forest's Michelle Greeneway then scored at 84:10 and 87:53 to give the Foresters the win and with it the conference title.

Greeneway gave Lake Forest a 1-0 lead with a marker at 21:31. St. Norbert's Katie Vanden Avond answered with goals at 26:33 and 39:43 to send the Green Knights into halftime with a 2-1 edge.

Greeneway knotted the score at 2-2 at 50:35 before St. Norbert pushed ahead by two with goals from Vanden Avond at 54:05 and Shannon Jung at 55:27. Lake Forest's Susie Baca scored at 68:58 to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Vanden Avond finished with three goals to give her 39 on the season, tied for the third-most in Division III history. Greeneway's four goals pushed her to 30 on the season. Vanden Avond has 130 career goals and Greeneway 104 career markers. The game was the first in Division III history to put a pair of career 100-goal scorers against each other in the same game.

Monica Stephans had two assists for St. Norbert, while Jung had one. Nina Perkkio added three assists for Lake Forest.

The Foresters outshot St. Norbert 24-6. Maddie Plinska made eight saves for the Green Knights, while Rachel Tenuta finished saveless for the Foresters.

Lake Forest will host the MWC Tournament next weekend. St. Norbert will face Carroll University in a semifinal match at a time to be determined.
