St. Norbert Tops Monmouth in MWC Tournament Semifinal

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College will play in the championship game of the Midwest Conference Tournament for the third-straight year following a four-set win over Monmouth College at Glennie Gym.

The Green Knights (22-9) claimed the tournament semifinal match by scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 25-11. Monmouth, the MWC champion and tournament's No. 1 seeding, saw its season end at 20-13. St. Norbert will face Beloit College at 1 p.m. Saturday for the tournament title, marking the third-straight year the two schools have met in the championship match.

St. Norbert gradually pulled away in the first set, taking a 12-9 lead out to 16-10. The Scots cut the deficit to 18-14 but St. Norbert closed out the match with seven-straight points.

Monmouth won a close second set, but Green Knights rolled in the final two sets. St. Norbert led 16-13 in the third set, but was able to get a six-point cushion thanks to a pair of service aces by Katie Stewart. The Green Knights were never seriously threatened in the fourth set, going on a 13-3 run to take a 9-6 lead out to a 22-9 bulge.

St. Norbert posted 14 team blocks, getting eight from Danielle Remy, seven from Lindsay Wiebe and six from Sarah Sulentic. The Green Knights hit .185, getting 44 kills against 17 errors in 146 attempts. Lauren Meehan had 15 kills with no errors in 33 attempts, while Remy ended with 10 kills. Stewart had 27 assists, and Catherine Guido had 27 digs.

Monmouth hit just .066, getting 43 kills in 167 attempts but was forced into 32 errors thanks to St. Norbert's blocking. Chelsey Widdop led the Scots with 16 kills.
