St. Norbert Salvages Split at Carroll

WAUKESHA - St. Norbert College opened Midwest Conference play with a doubleheader split against Carroll University at Frame Park. The Green Knights dropped the opener 10-7 before taking the nightcap 6-3.

St. Norbert (7-9, 1-1 MWC) fell behind 10-2 after three innings in the opener and couldn't dig its way out of the early hole, with Carroll's Matt Busse hitting a grand slam in a six-run third inning. Garrick Fisher had a two-run home run in the third inning, and Nick Pierre had a two-run double in the fifth.

Ryan Kehl was 3-for-5 with two runs scored in game one, while Chad Ljunggren was 2-for-3 and Jordan Powers 2-for-4. Bryan Stoppenbach took the loss for St. Norbert, allowing nine runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Josh Honzik led St. Norbert in the nightcap, earning his first collegiate win. Honzik allowed just seven hits in the complete-game effort, walking four and striking out one. The infielders were kept busy with 21 assists, and first baseman Ryan Way had 17 putouts.

St. Norbert took a 5-2 lead with a four-run fourth inning. Fisher had an RBI single, Jared Yost an RBI groundout and Kehl a two-run single. The Pioneers cut it to 5-3 with a run in the fifth, but Chad Ljunggren's RBI single in the sixth closed out the scoring.

Fisher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Powers was 3-for-6. Ryan Winter was 2-for-4, while Yost and Rob Berger were both 2-for-5. Yost, who had a run-scoring double in the first inning, had two RBIs.
