St. Norbert Wears Down UW-Oshkosh In Season Opener

DE PERE - St. Norbert College used a 17-2 run midway through the second half as the impetus behind a 65-50 win over UW-Oshkosh in a non-conference season opener on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (1-0) opened a season with a win for the fifth consecutive year. Oshkosh fell to 0-1.

St. Norbert held a 34-32 lead with 12 minutes 35 seconds remaining before going on its decisive run. The first part of the run was a 10-0 spurt by the Green Knights, with Mitchell Cloghessy getting six points. Paul Appleton's hoop and 3-pointer finished off the run for a 51-34 lead with 7:34 left. Oshkosh would get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

The Green Knights opened the game on a 9-2 run, with Appleton scoring seven of the points. Oshkosh slowly climed back into the game, taking a 20-18 lead with 3:30 left before halftime on a Cory Nickel basket. St. Norbert went ahead 24-20 on two Appleton free throws, a Brandon Gries basket and a Cloghessy basket. Oshkosh closed the half on a 5-1 run for a 25-25 halftime score.

Appleton and Gries led St. Norbert with 17 points apiece, with Gries going 11-for-12 at the free-throw line. Andrew Schwoerer added 13 points off the bench in his first collegiate game. The Green Knights shot 41.7 percent (20-for-48) from the floor and held a 42-25 rebounding advantage.

John Flanigan led the Titans with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Jade Royston added 11 points. The Titans shot just 34 percent (18-for-53) from the floor.
