Green Knights Open MWC Play With Sweep of Beloit

BELOIT - St. Norbert College opened Midwest Conference play for 2012 with a doubleheader sweep of Beloit College at the Strong Stadium Complex. The Green Knights, who have won three straight games for the first time this season, won by scores of 7-4 and 3-2.

St. Norbert (7-11, 2-0 MWC) took a 2-0 lead in the opener when Samantha Gross blasted an RBI triple and Steph Brunette followed with an RBI double in the second inning. The Green Knights padded their lead when Morgan Buboltz crushed a grand slam in the fifth inning for a 6-0 advantage. St. Norbert scored its last run on a Brittany Bauknecht RBI single in the seventh. Beloit scored two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.

Brunette was 4-for-4 in the opener, while Buboltz was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Bauknecht and Ashtin Schmechel also went 2-for-4 for the Green Knights, who banged out 14 hits.

Shannen Schmidt went the distance for St. Norbert, allowing five hits, one earned run and one walk with four strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Green Knights pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Brunette reached on a bunt single and after a popped-up bunt, Brunette stole second base. Buboltz then connected on an RBI double to left-center field.

St. Norbert took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Brunette hit an RBI triple and Brittany Narges scored on a wild pitch. The Buccaneers tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings.

Buboltz was 4-for-4 in the nightcap, while Brunette was 3-for-4 to give her a 7-for-8 performance on the day.

Morgan Rusch earned the win by allowing just four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
