St. Norbert Opens MWC Classic 2-2

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - St. Norbert College opened the first two days of the Midwest Conference Classic with splits each day for a 2-2 mark. The Green Knights lost to Lake Forest College 4-2 before defeating Grinnell College 9-1 on Friday. St. Norbert then topped Monmouth College 4-1 before losing 6-2 to Illinois College on Saturday.

St. Norbert (10-10, 2-2 MWC) opened the game against Lake Forest with a run in the top of the first inning. The Green Knights scored when Samantha Gross scored on Emily Laufer's single. The Foresters answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning, keyed by Kaleigh Ambrose's three-run home run.

Morgan Rusch took the loss, allowing five hits in 1/3 of an inning before giving way to Shannen Schmidt. Schmidt allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings with two walks and eight strikeouts. Gross was 2-for-4 for St. Norbert. Lake Forest pitcher Jessi Werner scattered six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Against Grinnell, St. Norbert scored twice each in the first and second innings and added five more runs in the third inning. Schmidt earned the win by allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Gross, Steph Brunette and MacKenzie Hazen were all 2-for-3, with Brunette and Hazen each scoring two runs.

Against Monmouth, Schmidt allowed just three hits and allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning. Schmidt did not walk a batter and struck out six.

St. Norbert scored three runs on five hits in the third inning, with Gross and Jessica DeMeuse getting RBI singles. Brunette had an RBI double in the fourth. Brunette finished 3-for-3 with two doubles for the Green Knights, who had seven hits.
