APPLETON - St. Norbert College split a pair of Midwest Conference North Division games with Lawrence University at Whiting Field, dropping the first game 5-3 before taking the nightcap 2-1.
The Green Knights (16-7, 5-1 MWC) scratched across runs in the second and sixth innings of game two to take a 2-0 lead, and held on for the win. Alex Larsen's groundout scored Travis Mason in the second inning, and Larsen's infield single in the sixth plated Jose Godinez. The Vikings got a run back in their half of the sixth, but could get no closer.
Matt Freeman earned the complete-game win for St. Norbert, allowing just five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. St. Norbert had seven hits, but nobody had a multi-hit game for the Green Knights.
The opener was scoreless until the seventh inning, when St. Norbert scored on a Nick Dagneau squeeze bunt. The Vikings answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but St. Norbert cut it to 3-2 in the eighth when Mason scored on an error. Lawrence put the game away with two runs in the eighth. St. Norbert got a run in the ninth when Alex Larsen forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk, but the game ended with the bases loaded.
Kevin Nutley took a no-hitter into the seventh inning for St. Norbert, but Lawrence got five hits in the seventh to pull ahead. Nutley took a tough loss, allowing five hits with five walks and 13 strikeouts.
St. Norbert, which left 13 runners on base, got two hits apiece from Mason and Chad Ljunggren.
