Ake and Berens' Doubles Title Leads Green Knights at MWC Championships

MADISON - St. Norbert College received a doubles championship from Katherine Ake and Maggie Berens to lead the Green Knights' effort at the Midwest Conference Singles and Doubles Championships this weekend at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

St. Norbert totaled 72 points to finish in a tie with Lake Forest College for second in the tournament results. MWC champion Grinnell College had the most points with 84. Carroll University was fourth with 57 points.

Ake and Berens were extended to three sets in the No. 3 doubles championship match. The duo topped Grinnell's Virginia Purcell and Julia Rumley 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Ashley Randazzo and Elizabeth Manlick fell in the No. 2 double championship match to Grinnell's Hanna Feldman and Emma Macdonald 6-2, 6-3. The No. 1 tandem of Nancy Chybowski and Erika Chitko lost in the semifinals to Grinnell's Shirlene Luk and Sadhana Athreya 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Manlick, Ake and Brittany Dudzik advanced to championship matches at Nos. 3, 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively, but had to settle for silver. Manlick fell to Lake Forest's Grace Dowling 6-2, 6-4. Ake lost to Feldman 6-1, 6-4 in her title match, while Dudzik lost 6-1, 6-3 to Carroll's Julie Schweiss.

The other three singles players were all eliminated in the semifinals. Chybowski lost to Carroll's Abigail Pellett 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Chitko fell to Athreya 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Ariel Bloniarz lost 0-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Lake Forest's Marisas Guggenheim at No. 5.
