Vanden Avond Sets Another Record as Green Knights Trim Cornell

DE PERE - St. Norbert College junior Katie Vanden Avond set another Midwest Conference record with her performance in the Green Knights' 7-1 win over Cornell College in a MWC game at Schneider Stadium.

Vanden Avond pumped in four goals to give her 31 on the season in 16 games. Vanden Avond's mark surpassed the previous mark which had stood for 27 years since Lawrence University's Libby Mullin scored 30 goals in 1986. Vanden Avond is the active NCAA all divisions leader in career goals with 85.

Vanden Avond scored the first goal at 12:18 when she played a ball to her feet and turned and finished. Following a Cornell own goal at 15:46, Vanden Avond scored on a header off a set piece at 25:51, and then finished an impressive strike from about 25 yards out at 37:51. Zoe Kurth gave the Green Knights a 5-0 lead with a 30-yard blast at 39:56.

Kaitlin Schmitz put the Green Knghts ahead 6-0 at 52:36, and Vanden Avond gained the record with another finish from 20 yards out at 54:30.

Cornell got its goal at 74:52 on a score by Jennifer Strebeck.

St. Norbert outshot Cornell 23-9. Sarah Platzer made one save for the Green Knights, while Maddie Plinska turned away five shots in the second half. Chelsea Harris made 12 saves for the Rams.
