St. Norbert Moves Into Sole Possession of First Place

GREEN BAY - When the smoke cleared at Western Racquet and Fitness Club, St. Norbert College ended up being the team residing in first place after doing battle with fellow Midwest Conference contenders Grinnell College and Cornell College.

The Green Knights (10-1, 6-0 MWC) opened the day with a 7-2 win over Grinnell, and then closed it out with a 7-2 win over Cornell. St. Norbert leads Cornell and Lake Forest College by one game and leads Grinnell by two games in the loss column with four matches remaining.

St. Norbert took a 2-1 lead on the Pioneers (4-4, 3-2) after doubles competition. Katherine Ake and Erika Chitko topped Hannah Cook and Julia Rumley 8-2 at No. 2. Ashley Randazzo and Anna Gosz defeated Anushka Joshi and Syndey Banach 8-3 at No. 3.

The Green Knights then ran away with the match with five wins in the six singles matches. Ake beat Virginia Purcell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Chitko bested Joshi 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4. Gosz claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rumley at No. 5. Elizabeth Manlick ground out a three-set win over Shirlene Luk at No. 1 singles by a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 margin. Nancy Chybowski also picked up a three-set triumph with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) win over Cook at No. 3.

Against Cornell, the two teams opened with singles play and the Green Knights claimed four of the six points. Manlick gained a win at No. 1 with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Ariana Hudson. Chitko ground out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Shashanna Moll at No. 4, while Gosz defeated Gabriella Ferro 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Randazzo beat Katie Mintle 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.

Manlick and Chybowski defeated Julia Thome and Kezia Koroma 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Ake and Chitko defeated Hudson and Ferro 8-3 at No. 2, while Gosz and Randazzo topped Anne Seng and Mintle 8-4.
