St. Norbert Dispatches Beloit

DE PERE - St. Norbert College used its recent sticky defense to jump ahead early and roll to a 72-47 Midwest Conference men's basketball win over Beloit College at Schuldes Sports Center. The Green Knights, who have won four straight, are now 6-5 overall and 2-2 in the MWC. Beloit fell to 2-9 and 0-4.

St. Norbert led 8-0 and didn't allow Beloit to score until just over five minutes into the game. The Green Knights led 25-6 with 3:52 left in the first half and eventually settled on a 38-13 halftime advantage.

Beloit opened the second half on a 10-2 run to get within 40-23, but St. Norbert went on a quick 8-0 spurt of its own on a conventional three-point play by Bryan Fleischmann, a layup by Rob Durrett and a 3-pointer by Paul Mallers. Beloit would get no closer than 20 the rest of the game. St. Norbert held its largest lead of 30 on two different occasions.

St. Norbert shot 50.9 percent from the field, making 28 of 55 shots. Twelve different Green Knights cracked the scoring column. Tom Katzfey and Eric Gruenewald each had 12 points, while Durrett added 10. The Green Knights held a 31-22 rebounding advantage an dhad just eight turnovers.

Beloit was led by Andy Horton, who had 13 points. Derek Lovgren added eight points off the bench for the Buccaneers, who made just 15 of 38 shots from the floor, good for 39.5 percent.
