Green Knights Win MWC Opener

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - St. Norbert College got Midwest Conference action off on a winning note with a 64-41 triumph over Lake Forest College at the LFC Sports Center.

The Green Knights (3-0, 1-0 MWC) wasted little time in taking command of the game. With the score knotted 6-6, the visitors went on an 11-0 run over a stretch of 5 minutes 28 seconds to take a 17-6 lead with 10:07 left in the first half.

Heidi Van Sistine got the run started with a pair of baskets, followed by a 3-pointer from Michaela Machurick. Stephanie Weigman canned a jumper and Brianna Byrne followed with a hoop to finish off the run. The Foresters (0-2, 0-1) would cut the deficit down to 21-17 with 4:32 left in the first half before St. Norbert settled on a 30-21 halftime lead.

St. Norbert held a 33-25 lead with 18:00 left before embarking on an impressive 13-1 run over the next 6:13. Byrne had two baskets and a free throw, Tasha Giese a basket and a pair of free throws, and Regan Carmichael and Heidi Van Sistine each had a hoop to put the game out of reach at 46-26 with 11:47 remaining.

Byrne led a balanced St. Norbert scoring effort with 12 points. Giese added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Van Sistine had 10 points and six rebounds. Mallory Nickerson added nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

St. Norbert shot 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from the floor and outrebounded the Foresters 43-31.

Brie Majkowski and Michelle Ricolcol had eight points apiece off the bench for the Foresters, who shot 31.3 percent (15-for-48) from the floor.
