St. Norbert Pulls Away From Ripon

RIPON - St. Norbert College shot just a shade under 52 percent in the second half and took command of a 62-39 win over Ripon College in a Midwest Conference game at Storzer Center.

St. Norbert (6-1, 3-0 MWC), ranked No. 22 in the D3hoops.com Top 25, connected on 14 of 27 field-goal attempts in the second half to lock down the win. Ripon fell to 1-4, 1-1.

The Green Knights held a 24-15 halftime lead before Ripon trimmed the deficit to 24-19 just over a minute into the second half. St. Norbert went on a decisive 15-4 run to take a 39-23 lead. The Green Knights scored the first six points of the run on a basket by Heidi Van Sistine, a pair of free throws by Brianna Byrne and a jumper by Jill Kleiman. Back-to-back baskets by Mallory Nickerson put the Green Knights up 16 with 12:32 left.

Ripon trailed 41-27 with 11:03 to go after a pair of Maddie Koster free throws, but St. Norbert 12-0 run to seal the win. Nickerson had the first two hoops of the run, while Michaela Machurick followed with a basket. Van Sistine then made back-to-back baskets, and Kleiman finished the run with a steal and layup.

In the first half, St. Norbert led 11-9 before getting some breathing room with an 8-0 run spanning about six minutes for a 19-9 edge 3:43 to go before halftime.

Nickerson led St. Norbert with 14 points, while Byrne added 12 points and Kleiman 11. The Green Knights shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the floor.

Ripon shot 31.9 percent (15-for-47) from the floor. Jonalee Elliott was the only Red Hawk in double figures with 10 points.
