Close But No Cigar for Green Knights at No. 2 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER - St. Norbert College battled defending national champion UW-Whitewater all day but dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to the Warhawks at Prucha Field. The Green Knights lost the opener 3-2 in 10 innings and then fell in the nightcap 4-2.

Whitewater (21-4), currently ranked No. 2 in the D3baseball.com Top 25, got two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead in the opener. The Green Knights answered with two runs in the fourth inning. Troy Rottier scored on an error, and Tyler Brown singled in Tyler Banovich for St. Norbert's runs.

The Green Knights (13-14) would manage just one hit in the last six innings, and the Warhawks won it in the bottom of the 10th on a two-out single by Casey Power.

Rottier was 2-for-3 for St. Norbert, which had five hits. Jake McMahon took the loss in 2 2/3 innings of relief of Matt Freeman, who allowed four hits in seven innings of work.

Derek Klegin opened the second game with a single, and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Kozinski's groundout gave the Green Knights a 1-0 lead. Whitewater answered with a run in the bottom of the first to knot the game 1-1.

St. Norbert pushed ahead 2-1 in the third inning, with Banovich droving in Klegin on a groundout. Whitewater took the lead with a three-run fourth inning, with Steve Chamberlain's two-out, two-run triple snapping a 2-2 tie.

Klegin was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for St. Norbert, which again had five hits. Brett Nohr took the loss, allowing seven hits in five innings. Nate Schadrie allowed two hits in three scoreless innings of relief.
