St. Norbert Charges to Second MWC Men's Golf Championship

ROCKFORD, Ill. - St. Norbert College used a strong final two days to capture its second Midwest Conference men's golf championship in three years at the MWC Championship at Aldeen Golf Club.

The Green Knights covered the 54-hole course with a 319-305-311, totaling 935 to outpace runner-up Carroll University by nine strokes (311-313-320--944). St. Norbert's second- and third-day scores were the best marks of the day, erasing an eight-stroke deficit after 18 holes.

St. Norbert also clinched the MWC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship, which will be held May 12-15 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. St. Norbert won its first MWC title and made its first NCAA appearance in 2013.

The Green Knights and Carroll were tied at 624 after the first 36 holes, but St. Norbert received three third-day scores of 77 to pull away for the title.

Ben Socha led the Green Knights overall, tying for third place with a 78-72-84--234. He finished seven strokes behind conference champion Drake Decker, who was medalist with a 73-77-77--227.

Ben Bobinski and Isaiah Harmison both tied for eighth place. Bobinski registered an 80-77-81--238, while Harmison carded 84-77-77--238.

Alex Okray and Ben Verbeten also earned All-MWC honors by finishing in a three-way tie for tenth place. Okray finished 80-82-77--239, while Verbeten was 81-81-77--239.

The final-round scores of 77 by Harmison, Okray and Verbeten tied for third-lowest scores of the day - and were three of the just 11 sub-80 scores of the round.

Nick Mueller was 16th with an 84-79-80--243.
