Second Half Dooms Green Knights at UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT - St. Norbert College saw a nine-point halftime lead melt away in the early moments of the second half and could never recapture the lead in a 66-61 non-conference loss to UW-Stevens Point at Quandt Fieldhouse.

The Pointers (3-1), ranked No. 9 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 and the defending NCAA Division III national champion, erased a 33-24 halftime deficit in the first eight minutes of the second half to win the first regular-season meeting between the two teams since 1992.

St. Norbert (1-1) led 40-31 with 16:43 left after a Taylor Penn 3-pointer, but the Green Knights went cold during the decisive run by Stevens Point. The Pointers went on a 12-0 run to take a 43-40 lead with 11:17 to go. Stevens Point went ahead at 41-40 with 12:11 left on a Zack Goedeke jumper.

The Green Knights trailed by as much as seven at 58-51 with 4:13 left, but shaved the deficit down to one after D.J. DeValk hit a pair of 3-pointers, the last one making it 60-59 with 1:34 to go. Stevens Point responded with a Goedeke layup with 1:05 to go and St. Norbert never got closer than three points the rest of the game.

St. Norbert led for most of the first half, leading by as much as 10 points before settling on its lead of 33-24 at the break.

The Green Knights shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) from the floor for the game. Ben Bobinski led the Green Knights with 18 points, while DeValk added 14 points. St. Norbert outrebounded the Pointers 38-25.

Stevens Point shot an even 50 percent (25-for-50) from the floor but was a blistering 16-for-26 (61.5 percent) in the second half. Goedeke led all scorers with 26 points, while Sean McGann added 13 points.
