St. Norbert Pulls Away to Trip Foresters

DE PERE - St. Norbert College slowly pulled away as the game progressed as the Green Knights went on to claim a 58-39 win over Lake Forest College on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights (5-2, 4-0 MWC), who trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, improved to 32-1 in their last 33 games against Midwest Conference opponents with the win.

St. Norbert overcame a slow start, falling behind 5-0 out of the gate. The Green Knights would take an 11-10 lead but the Foresters answered with baskets from Brittany Avonts and Kelsey Schmitt to eventually take their one-point lead after 10 minutes.

Both teams struggled to score in the first six minutes of the second quarter, but the Green Knights got 3-pointers from Regan Carmichael and Brianna Byrne to lead 19-16 with four minutes left before halftime. Five points from Byrne and another 3-pointer just before halftime by Carmichael put St. Norbert ahead 27-21 at halftime.

Lake Forest (3-3, 2-2) rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter to trail 32-29 with 2:25 left in the period, but two hoops from Stephanie Weigman, a pair of free throws by Byrne and a layup by Carmichael capped an 8-0 run to end the frame with a 40-29 lead.

The Foresters would trail by nine early in the fourth quarter, but Carmichael would can a 3-pointer with 9:11 left to put St. Norbert up by 12 and the Green Knights would hold a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

St. Norbert shot 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the floor. Byrne led St. Norbert with 19 points, while Carmichael added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Weigman and Sarah Ratajczyk had 10 points apiece.

Lake Forest shot 29.2 percent (14-for-48) from the floor and had 25 turnovers. K.C. Stralka topped the Foresters with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
