St. Norbert Wraps Up Regular Season With Split

GREEN BAY - St. Norbert College finished the regular season with a split of two Midwest Conference duals, tipping Cornell College 5-4 before losing to Grinnell College 8-1 at Western Racquet & Fitness.

The Green Knights (7-8, 4-5 MWC) got off to a good start against Cornell with a pair of doubles wins. Kyle Battle and Zach Simonet defeated Thomas Weiss and Corey Duncan 8-2 at No. 2. Kahlo Vue and Joe Oleniczak followed with an 8-2 triumph over Alex Rand and Tom Greene at No. 3.

St. Norbert picked up its three singles points to secure the dual win by claiming the Nos. 4-6 flights. Simonet beat Duncan 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, while Oleniczak topped Greene 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 5. Matt La Violette beat Rand 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Green Knights picked up their lone point against Grinnell in a thrilling three-set affair at No. 1 singles between St. Norbert's Ben Vande Zande and the Pioneers' Cole Miller. Miller won the first set 6-1 before Vande Zande came back to take the second set 6-3. Vande Zande then won the tiebreaker 10-6 to take the match.

St. Norbert will conclude its season at the Midwest Conference Singles/Doubles Championships Saturday and Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
