Green Knights Connect on 3-Pointers to Top Clarke

PLATTEVILLE - St. Norbert College used a couple of late 3-pointers to pull away from Clarke College, posting a 77-66 win on the second day of the UW-Platteville Tip-Off Classic.

The Green Knights moved to 2-1 on the season, while Clarke fell to 1-5.

St. Norbert held a 62-57 lead with 6 minutes 22 seconds left to play before making 5 of 8 free throws over the next two minutes to take a 67-57 lead. Bryan Fleischmann canned a 3-pointer from the left win with 4:14 to go and a 70-57 advantage.

Following a Clarke basket, Mike Dowden connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was expiring for a 73-59 bulge with 3:23 to play.

The Green Knights and Crusaders were tied at 12-12 in the first five minutes before Dave Wipperfurth hit on consecutive 3-pointers for an 18-13 advantage. Steve Papke's layup with 8:04 left in the first half capped off a 17-5 St. Norbert run for a 29-17 lead.

Clarke closed to within 31-26 with 4:44 left in the first half, but a Dowden 3-pointer with 4:24 to go before halftime sparked a 9-5 run to give the Green Knights a 40-31 lead at the break.

St. Norbert shot 50 percent from the floor and also made 11 of 22 3-pointers. Dowden led the Green Knights with 19 points, a St. Norbert career high. Wipperfurth matched a career-high with 17 points. Fleischmann added 11 points. Tom Katzfey, who had 21 points against Loras in the tournament's first game, added 10 points against Clarke and was the Green Knights' lone selection to the all-tournament team.

Cory Billingsley led Clarke with 20 points, which all came in the second half. Eli Fitzsimons added 14 points for the Crusaders, who had 21 turnovers.
