Green Knights Roll Past Carroll to Open Season

WAUKESHA - St. Norbert College enjoyed a big second half en route to a 76-49 win over Carroll University in its season opener in a non-conference game at Van Male Fieldhouse.

The Green Knights (1-0) scored 28 points in the third quarter to pull away from a 30-27 halftime lead to take control.

Carroll (0-1) went the last 9 minutes 10 seconds of the second quarter on a 15-3 run to take a 27-12 deficit all the way to trailing 30-27 at intermission.

St. Norbert responded early and often in the third quarter. The Green Knights scored on their first seven possessions of the second half to kick start their huge scoring output in the third quarter. Mallory Nickerson scored consecutive baskets to push a 37-34 lead to 41-34 with 6:52 left. Brianna Byrne then canned a 3-pointer and Nickerson converted another hoop for a 46-36 edge with 5:41 to go.

Carroll scored the next basket but St. Norbert then scored the next eight points - six by Regan Carmichael - for an insurmountable 54-38 lead with just over three minutes left in the period.

St. Norbert got off to a quick start in the first half, taking a 22-4 lead out of the gate before settling on a 22-9 advantage after the first period heading into Carroll's big second-quarter run.

The Green Knights shot 50.8 percent (30-for-59) from the floor, including 66.7 percent (18-for-27) in the second half. Carmichael had a game-high 20 points, while Nickerson added 13 points and Byrne 12.

Carroll shot 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the floor. Brittney Wald led the Pioneers with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
