Green Knights Sweep Lumberjacks

DE PERE - St. Norbert College picked up a sweep of its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series of Northland College with a 5-2 victory at Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights (16-4-1, 12-3-1 NCHA) moved to within one point of first-place Adrian College in the overall league standings with four regular-season games remaining.

St. Norbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the early going. Clay Van Diest scored just 3:52 into the game and Roman Uchyn added a power-play goal at the 8:22 mark for a two-goal edge. Northland countered with a power-play goal by Lucas DeBenedet at 16:55, but the Green Knights took a 3-1 lead when Sean Campbell scored on a backdoor pass at 18:59 of the first period.

Northland cut the deficit to 3-2 with a power-play goal at 1:14 of the second period by Kurt Sonne. The Green Knights would hold their one-goal lead until late in the period when Steven Phillips finished a nice backhand play at the 16:10 mark. St. Norbert took its 4-2 lead into second intermission.

The Green Knights added an insurance goal when Ross Pavek scored at 4:46 of the third period.

Campbell added an assist for a two-point game, while Pijus Rulevicius added two assists.

St. Norbert outshot Northland 47-22. Tony Kujava made 20 saves for the Green Knights, while a pair of Northland goaltenders made 42 stops.

St. Norbert was 1-for-8 on the power play, while Northland was 2-for-4.
