Green Knights Survive Tense Finish Against Monmouth

DE PERE - St. Norbert College remained unbeaten in the Midwest Conference but had to hold on to do it, topping Monmouth College 55-53 at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights held a 54-48 lead with 1:36 to play after a Rachel Hermus basket. Monmouth answered with a 3-pointer by Justine Boone and a Melissa Gorski basket to make it 54-53 with 37 seconds left.

Following a St. Norbert turnover, Boone was fouled by Morgan Strasser with 3.1 seconds left in a 1-and-1 situation. St. Norbert called a timeout, and Boone missed the free throw long. The rebound caromed to a mass of players, with the ball squirting out of bounds to St. Norbert's possession. Jamie Kuhl made one of two free throws with 0.1 seconds left to close out the win.

St. Norbert held a 41-31 lead with 12:15 left to play before the Scots went on a 13-0 run to take a 44-41 lead with 7:42 to go. The Green Knights responded with a 7-0 run, sparked by a 3-pointer by Krista Pelky. Kuhl and Rachel Hermus hit layups for a 48-44 advantage with 5:52 to go.

Hermus led St. Norbert with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Pelky came off the bench to add 13. The Green Knights shot 39.7 percent from the floor, making 23 of 58 field goals. St. Norbert outrebounded the Scots 39-32 but had 21 turnovers.

Monmouth was led by 16 points from Tanesha Hughes. Alison Andrews added 12 points for Monmouth, which shot 41.5 percent frmom the floor making 22 of 53 field goals.
