Green Knights Lead MWC Championship After Day 1

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - St. Norbert College's quest for a third consecutive Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field championship took a big step forward as the Green Knights hold the lead after Day 1 at Illinois College's King Field House.

The Green Knights scored 91.5 points after seven events to hold a comfortable lead in the team standings. Monmouth College is second with 54 points, while Cornell College is third with 43.5 points.

St. Norbert got conference championships from Samantha Morateck in the high jump and long jump, Brittany Kozlowski in the 1-mile run and Kristina Herman in the shot put.

Morateck finished with a height of 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 meters), just 1 centimeter shy of matching the MWC Indoor record set by St. Norbert Hall of Famer Vicci Verbrick in 1987. Morateck also won the long jump with a distance of 17-1 1/2.

Kozlowski turned in a time of 5:03.86 in the 1-mile run, while Herman uncorked a throw of 42-6 1/4 in the shot put.

Taylor Domro finished second in the 1-mile run with a time of 5:04.95, while Erin Artz was second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:18.01.

The Green Knights' 4x200-meter relay of Maddie LeBrun, Sarah Duff, Erin Lang and Mekenzie Mattes was second in 1:48.22. The 1,600-meter sprint medley also finished second with LeBrun, Duff, Kaitlyn Hintz and Haley Joosten finishing in 4:13.21.

Savanna Smith was third in the shot put at 38-11 1/2, while Hannah Kruse was sixth at 36-4.

Tori Nelsen was fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 19:03.34, while Sarah Parbs was sixth in 19:25.11.

Lisa Baeten finished sixth in the 1-mile run in 5:22.16. Morgan Pinardi was eighth in the women's high jump at 4-4 3/4.
