Green Knights Sweep Lawrence to Clinch MWC North

APPLETON - St. Norbert College wrapped up the Midwest Conference North Division title with a doubleheader sweep of Lawrence University at Whiting Field. The Green Knights topped the Vikings 13-9 and 10-0.

The Green Knights (24-8, 13-2 MWC North) took big early leads in both games, but had to hold on to win the opener.

St. Norbert scored twice in the third inning on a Tyler Banovich sacrifice fly and a Griffin Jack bases-loaded walk. The Green Knights then had a seven-run uprising in the fourth inning. Derek Klegin had a sacrifice fly, while Michael Byrne later scored on a throwing error. Jacob Raeder walked with the bases loaded to bring home another run. Griffin Jack then had a two-run double, followed by a Sean Grant RBI groundout. Jack then scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the frame.

The Vikings would score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and then cut the score to 9-7 by scoring five runs after two outs in the seventh inning.

St. Norbert scored four insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Klegin drove in a run on a bunt, with Hunter Larson following with a bunt single to make it 11-7. Raeder had a bases-loaded walk to bring home a run and Jack drove in a run on a groundout. The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final scoring.

The Green Knights had just seven hits, with Andy Peterik going 2-for-2 with three runs scored and Jack finishing 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Jason Malkowski got the win, allowing four hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

In the nightcap, St. Norbert scored twice in the third inning on a Banovich sacrifice fly and a Jack Maastricht RBI single. The Green Knights added five runs in the fourth inning. Peterik scored on a passed ball, followed by a Raeder single to drive in a run. Sean Ferraro then stroked a three-run double to cap the rally.

The Green Knights added a run in the fifth inning when Klegin scored on a wild pitch. Maastricht had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, while Ray McDonald scored on an error in the ninth inning.

Jake McMahon went seven innings, allowing three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

St. Norbert finished with 10 hits. Ferraro was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Maastricht was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
