AUBURNDALE, Fla. - St. Norbert College opened the 2018 season with a doubleheader split against Westfield State College, wining the opener 9-5 before dropping the nightcap 3-1 at Lake Myrtle Park.

The Green Knights (1-1) took advantage of the largesse of the Westfield State pitching in the first inning of the opener, with the first four hitters drawing walks for a quick 1-0 lead. After an out at the plate, Sean Grant stroked a two-run single to make it 3-0. Sean Ferraro brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, and Andy Peterik had a two-run single with two outs for a 6-0 edge.

The Owls (2-3-1), the pre-season favorite in the MASCAC, got two runs back in the bottom of the first but St. Norbert quickly answered. Jack Maastricht walked and scored on Hunter Larson's double and outfield error. Griffin Jack's double put St. Norbert ahead 8-2. The Green Knights added another run when Ferraro scored on a wild pitch in the third inning. Westfield State would get three runs in its half of the third inning, but neither team would score the rest of the way.

Jack finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to lead the Green Knights, while Maastricht drew four walks. Jason Malkowski scattered 10 hits with two walks and one strikeout to get the win, while Nick Klavekoske struck out two in the seventh inning to record the save.

St. Norbert couldn't solve Westfield State pitcher John Gegetskas in the nightcap, who held the Green Knights to three hits while striking out 12.

The Green Knights tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first on Robbie Dombrowski's two-out single, but the Owls scored two runs in the third inning and held on for the win.

Carson Jacques took the loss, allowing seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
