St. Norbert Splits to Open MWC Tournament

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College opened the Midwest Conference Tournament with a split, beating Grinnell College 12-11 in thrilling fashion before dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker to Monmouth College.

The Green Knights (23-14) will face Grinnell at 10 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game at Glasgow Field. The winner must beat Monmouth twice to win the MWC championship.

St. Norbert trailed Grinnell 11-4 going into the bottom of the ninth inning before erupting for an improbable eight runs to steal the victory. Tyler Banovich opened the inning with a double and Jacob Raeder bunted for a hit. Robbie Dombrowski walked and Brett Reinhart singled to load the bases and score a run. Lucas Reynolds bunted for a hit to bring in a second run. Sean Ferraro's groundout made it 11-7, while Hunter Larson and Jason Malkowski each singled to bring it to within 11-9. Following a pitching change, Griffin Jack was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a popout, Raeder singled up the middle to cut the deficit to 11-10. Dombrowski and Reinhart were then each hit by a pitch to force in a run and end the game.

The Green Knights trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the third inning. Larson and Malkowski had RBI doubles and Banovich a run-scoring single. The Pioneers then built their lead with five runs in the fifth and four runs in the eighth.

Reinhart was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Raeder was 3-for-5. Reynolds, Banovich, Larson and Malkowski all had two hits apiece.

In the second game, Monmouth snapped a 4-4 tie with a run in the top of the ninth inning on an infield single with two outs. St. Norbert got the leadoff runner on in the bottom half but couldn't tie the game.

Raeder had a run-scoring single in the second after Monmouth scored two runs in the top half of the inning. St. Norbert scored twice in the third inning on a RBI grounder by Ferraro and a run-scoring double by Larson. Monmouth scored twice in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead, which held up until St. Norbert scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to tie the score.

Banovich, Larson and Reynolds all had two hits apiece.
