Green Knights In Control After Day 1 at MWC Championship

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College has a firm grasp on first place in the team standings after the first day of the Midwest Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship at Monmouth College's Huff Center.

The Green Knights totaled 96 points through the first seven events, well ahead of Monmouth's 48 points. Beloit College is in third place with 45 1/2 points.

St. Norbert took four of the top six spots in the 1-mile run. Graceanne Tarsa won the event in 5:16.88, followed by Joyana Tarsa in third place at 5:18.87. Alex Bruley was fourth in 5:21.54, while Kelley Gardipee was sixth in 5:24.10.

Gretchen Price won the 5,000-meter run in 18:52.90, followed by Abby Janto in second place at 19:04.27. Carolyn Neerdaels was eighth in 19:46.22.

Savanna Smith also picked up a conference championship, throwing 42 feet 9 3/4 inches in the shot put. Kristina Herman was second at 41-7 1/4.

The 800-meter relay of Maddie Lebrun, Haidyn Mueller, Sydney Zima and Sarah Wiseman was second in 1:46.55. Lauren Rottier finished second in the high jump at 5-1 1/4, while Sydney Moore was fifth at 4-11 1/2 and Hayley Winzenried was sixth at 4-11 1/2.

The sprint medley relay of Sarah Duff, Katherine Wanie, Brianne Barta and Megan Cibulka was third in 4:16.71.

Wanie was fifth in the long jump at 16-7 3/4 and Zima was seventh in 16-3 1/4.
