Vandenberg Leads St. Norbert at MWC Singles Championships

MADISON - St. Norbert College's Alex Vandenberg led the Green Knights at the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Singles Championships at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Vandenberg reached the championship match of the No. 4 flight before dropping a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Grinnell College's Ben Cobin. Vandenberg earned a hard-fought three-set win over Lake Forest College's Chase Garber in the semifinals by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 score. Vandenberg also earned a win in the quarterfinals over Monmouth College's Alex Martin 6-4, 6-0.

Jordan Crump reached the semifinals at No. 5, coming up short to Grinnell's Michael Conlin-Brandenburg 6-0, 6-0. Crump defeated Cornell College's Nick Adamou 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 in his quarterfinal match. Porter Beilfuss also reached the semifinals before succumbing in a tough three-set loss to Lawrence University's Cam Strawn 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Beilfuss topped Cornell's Koichi Okazaki 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Luke Andrekus lost in the consolation championship match at No. 3 to Michael Connolly 8-1. Andrekus topped Ripon College's Preston Wurtz 8-3 in the consolation semifinal after dropping a tough 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 match to Lake Forest College's Joe Bove in the quarterfinals.

The Green Knights' Matt La Violette lost an 8-6 count to Illinois College's Jonah Wheeland in the consolation semifinal at No. 2. La Violette lost his quarterfinal match to Lawrence's Aidan Delgado 6-0, 6-0. Johnny Zanotti lost in the quarterfinals at No. 1 to Grinnell's Bowen Mince 6-3, 6-2 after opening with a 5-0 (retired) win over Knox College's Ajay Gustafson in the first round.
