St. Norbert Opens Big Weekend With Sweep of Grinnell

DE PERE - St. Norbert College opened a pivotal weekend of action in the Midwest Conference with a 3-0 win over Grinnell College in front of a raucous crowd at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center. The Green Knights swept the Pioneers 25-20, 25-21, 27-25.

The Green Knights (19-6, 5-0 MWC) won for the 11th consecutive match and handed Grinnell (19-3, 4-1) its first conference loss in the process. St. Norbert will host fellow league unbeaten Cornell College (13-7, 6-0) at 1 p.m. Saturday in De Pere.

St. Norbert trailed 18-17 in the first set before scoring four consecutive points to take a 21-18. The two sides traded points before the Green Knights closed out the set with three of the last four points. In the second set, St. Norbert erased a 13-12 deficit with five consecutive points and wouldn't lead by less than three points at 18-15 the rest of the set.

The Green Knights looked in good shape in the third set holding a 10-6 lead before Grinnell went on a 13-5 run to take a 19-15 advantage. The Pioneers would hold the lead until St. Norbert battled back to tie things up at 22-22. Grinnell answered with two points to take a 24-22 lead and reach set point, but St. Norbert got kills from Jessica Geurts and Lexie Van Hiel to tie things back up. Grinnell would get the next point but a St. Norbert block by Van Hiel, Haley Bartz and Grace Baumann squared things at 25-25. A Baumann kill and a Grinnell attacking error closed out the match in the Green Knights' favor.

St. Norbert hit .267 for the match, getting 50 kills with 15 errors in 131 attempts. Baumann posted a team-high 20 kills, while Van Hiel totaled 10. Geurts and Katelyn Hanrahan had eight apiece. Emily Rohloff totaled 42 assists.

Liz Maastricht finished with a match-high 24 digs, with Rohloff adding 15 and Emily Terry 10. Van Hiel had four blocks, while Bartz and Geurts had three apiece.

Grinnell hit .113, getting 32 kills with 18 errors in 124 attempts. Kaylin Kuhn had a team-high 13 kills for the Pioneers.
