PLYMOUTH - St. Norbert College gave new head women's basketball coach Amanda Leonhard-Perry a win in her head coaching debut with a hard-fought 59-50 win over Lakeland University at Woltzen Gymnasium.

The victory for the Green Knights came against a Muskies squad that was 20-6 a year ago and returns four starters.

St. Norbert trailed early, falling behind 8-4 midway through the first quarter. The Green Knights would tie it at 8-8 and 10-10 before Lakeland would take a 13-10 lead, but Liz Edinger's 3-pointer late in the first quarter knotted the score 13-13.

The Green Knights held a 20-18 lead in the second quarter before going on a 9-0 run to go up 29-18. Edinger had a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a free throw by Sarah Chouinard, while a hoop by Kaycee Gierczak with 1:23 left in the half closed out the run. Lakeland would counter quickly, going on an 8-1 run before halftime to cut the deficit to 30-26 at intermission.

St. Norbert saw its lead reduced to one at 32-31 early in the third quarter, but Macie Zurfluh canned a 3-pointer for a four-point edge. Sarah Neumann pushed the lead to seven with a conventional three-point play, and then added a fast break layup for a 40-31 lead with 5:41 left in the period. The Green Knights would lead by as much as 12 points after another Neumann basket for a 45-33 lead with 4:08 to go in the period. St. Norbert settled on a 49-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Green Knights would go the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter without scoring, with the Muskies eventually getting to within 51-49 with 4:07 remaining. Neumann hit a jumper in the paint with 3:33 left, and after a defensive stop Zurfluh's hoop put St. Norbert up 55-49 with 2:50 to go. Lakeland would score just one point the rest of the way.

St. Norbert shot 23-for-57 (40.4 percent) from the floor. Edinger and Neumann both came off the bench to lead the Green Knights in scoring, each posting 11 points. Zurfluh finished with nine points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Gierczak had six points and nine rebounds. St. Norbert outrebounded Lakeland by a commanding 48-26, including 17-5 on the offensive glass.
