Slow Start Stops St. Norbert Against Calvin

DE PERE - St. Norbert College suffered through a tough second quarter and couldn't recover in a 63-55 loss to Calvin University in a first-round game of the St. Norbert College Tip-Off Tournament on Connie Tilley Court at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center.

The Green Knights (1-1) will face UW-Stout at 1 p.m. Saturday in the consolation game. Calvin will face Illinois Wesleyan University, an 84-75 winner over Stout, in the 3 p.m. championship game.

St. Norbert trailed 13-10 late in the first quarter after a Macie Zurfluh basket but Calvin would score six points in the final 58 seconds of the period for a 19-10 lead. Calvin would continue its run into the second quarter, when it opened up a 31-12 lead with 6:06 left in the period - an 18-2 run by the visitor. Calvin would settle on a 38-16 halftime lead.

The Green Knights trailed 43-16 early in the third quarter before snapping a seven-minute scoring drought on a Zurfluh basket. St. Norbert would slowly climb back into the game from there, going on a 17-4 run to trail 47-33 after three quarters following a 3-pointer by Liz Edinger.

Edinger canned another triple on St. Norbert's first possession of the fourth quarter to get to within 47-36. The Green Knights trailed 51-41 with 6:17 left, but Calvin would score on its next four possessions to effectively decide the outcome.

St. Norbert shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the floor, but committed 20 turnovers. Edinger and Kaycee Gierczak each had 15 points, while Zurfluh had 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

Calvin shot 34.9 percent (22-for-63) from the floor, but was 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) at the free-throw line. Gabby Timmer had a game-high 16 points, while Kara Minderhoud added 10 points.
