Green Knights Drop Heartbreaker in MWC Championship Game

MONMOUTH, Ill. - St. Norbert College fell in the Midwest Conference Championship Game to Monmouth 10-7 in heartbreaking fashion at Zorn Memorial Stadium.

The Green Knights (6-3) yielded a Monmouth touchdown with 2 seconds remaining on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Carter Boyer to Jake Uryasz for the decisive points.

The score ended a wild fourth quarter that saw several momentum swings. Monmouth pinned St. Norbert at its own 1-yard line with 11:02 remaining, but the Green Knights would move 71 yards in 14 plays and melt 8:23 off the clock before a field-goal attempt from 44 yards was blocked. The St. Norbert defense would stiffen, stopping Monmouth on downs with a sack at the Monmouth 20 with 2:39 to go.

Following a first-down run, St. Norbert would force Monmouth to call its final timeout. The Green Knights had a third-and-2 at the Monmouth 12, but a run netted one yard. St. Norbert tried to seal the win with by going for it on fourth down, but was stopped for no gain, with Monmouth taking over on its own 10 with 55 seconds to go and the Green Knights nursing a 7-3 lead.

Monmouth reserve quarterback Carter Boyer connected on pass plays of 30 and 25 yards on the first two plays, and following a third completion the Scots had a first down at the St. Norbert 26. On the next play, Boyer was intercepted by Kendall Karcz, but the play was nullified by a defensive pass interference penalty. Two players later, Boyer found Uryasz in the back end of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Monmouth would score first on a 32-yard field goal by Joey Biel with 4:34 left in the second quarter. St. Norbert immediately answered with a five-play, 75-yard drive, scoring on a David Lox 6-yard touchdown run 2:58 before halftime, with the Green Knights taking the 7-3 lead into halftime.

St. Norbert then reached the Monmouth red zone in the third quarter but a field goal was missed, but the ensuing play the Green Knights forced a fumble with Jerome Tillis recovering at the Monmouth 27. The Green Knights had a first down at the Monmouth 16 but a chop-block penalty and two quarterback sacks took St. Norbert out of field goal range.

St. Norbert outgained Monmouth 293-256 in total offense. Nate Ihlenfeldt had 20 carries for 86 yards, while Gage McClanahan completed 16 of 30 passes for 175 yards. Samuel Staehling completed his stellar career at St. Norbert with six catches for 85 yards.

Monmouth's Devin Lawrence led the Fighting Scots on the ground with 91 yards on 23 carries. Playing on only the game's final series, Boyer completed all five of his passes for 76 yards.

Lucas Dutcher, Kordell Draves and Jerome Tillis all had seven tackles apiece to lead the Green Knights.
