DE PERE - St. Norbert College continued its solid play as of late with an impressive 6-1 dispatching of Augsburg University in a rare February non-conference game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (13-8-2) have posted an 11-1-2 mark in their last 14 games since an uncharacteristic 2-7 start. Augsburg (13-7-1) entered the game in first place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Augsburg scored first when Grant Reichenbacher finished at 9:53 of the first period. St. Norbert answered late in the period when Peter Bates registered his 14th goal of the season when he scored at 18:08. The goal extended Bates' consecutive game scoring streak to 16 games, and gave him a marker in seven of his last eight games.
St. Norbert took a 2-1 lead after two periods when Tim Nicksic scored at the 11:31 of the frame.
The Green Knights then pulled away with four third-period goals. Ben Schmidling deflected a Chase Mickelson drive from the blue line to give St. Norbert a 3-1 lead just 1:48 into the period. Peyton Frantti then registered a big shorthanded goal at 7:37. Michael Spethmann put St. Norbert ahead 5-1 when his shot from the goal line tucked inside the right elbow of the cage at 16:57. Michael McChesney closed out the scoring with a goal at 18:13.
Nicksic added two assists for a three-point game. Bates, Frantti and Schmidling all had assists to finish with two points. Kurt Black added two assists for two points.
St. Norbert outshot Augsburg 34-21. Colby Entz made 20 saves for the Green Knights, while Daniil Gerasimov made 28 stops for the Auggies.
Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
