St. Norbert Falls In Five Sets at Maranatha Baptist

WATERTOWN - St. Norbert College extended Maranatha Baptist University to five sets but eventually succumbed in a 3-2 loss in a non-conference match at MBU Gymnasium. The Sabercats closed out the Green Knights with a 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 15-5 win.

St. Norbert trailed the fifth set by a 6-2 margin but rallied to get to within 7-5. Maranatha Baptist closed out the match with eight consecutive points.

The Green Knights opened the match trailing 12-9 before rattling off seven consecutive points behind a kill and a pair of service aces from Sean Loughney. Maranatha got to within 24-23 before St. Norbert won the set on a Sabercats hitting error. In the fourth set, St. Norbert trailed 21-19 before scoring six of the last eight points to force the fifth set behind kills from Jake Bettag, Josh Hauke and Loughney.

St. Norbert hit .092 in the match, getting 43 kills against 29 errors in 153 attempts. Hauke totaled 11 kills, while Loughney added nine kills and Bettag seven. Ben Rinella finished with 23 assists and Eddie Pacula added 16 assists.

Rinella finished with 11 digs and five blocks. Hauke added five blocks and Loughney three.

Maranatha Baptist hit .168 with 53 kills against 29 errors in 143 swings. Phillip Holbrook had a match-high 16 kills and Joel Depue added 13 kills.
