Knights Salvage Tie With Pointers

GREEN BAY - St. Norbert College rallied to extend its unbeaten streak to 17 games, posting a 2-2 tie with UW-Stevens Point in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The Green Knights, ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Poll, are 17-1-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the NCHA. St. Norbert gained a point on second-place UW-River Falls, which lost 4-3 in overtime to St. Scholastica. Stevens Point fell to 13-5-2, 4-4-1 in the NCHA.

Stevens Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, scoring twice 18 seconds apart. Brett Beckfeld tapped home a power-play goal from the doorstep at 17:54 for the game's first goal. Sean Fish then scored at 18:12 on a shot from the left faceoff circle. Prior to Stevens Point's two goals, St. Norbert had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:51 but couldn't score.

St. Norbert cashed in on a power play early in the second period. Matt Boyd scored off a scrum in front of the net for his 16th marker of the season at 1:08 of the second. The rest of the second period was marred by penalties, with St. Norbert getting eight minors and Stevens Point six.

In the third period and overtime, there were no penalties. St. Norbert scored the equalizer on a Marc Belanger wrister from the right faceoff circle at 9:43. Belanger tallied his 16th goal of the season and has now scored in 16 straight games.

Stevens Point had the best overtime scoring chance, getting a puck on the goalline next to a prone Kyle Jones but Belanger cleared the puck to quell the chance.

St. Norbert was 1-for-5 on the power play in the game, while Stevens Point was 1-for-7.

Thomas Speer made 32 saves for the Pointers, while Jones made 22 stops for the Green Knights.
