Green Knights Wear Down Pioneers, Move to Within One Game of First

DE PERE - St. Norbert College methodically wore down Carroll University and went on to post a 66-51 Midwest Conference win at Schuldes Sports Center.

The Green Knights improved to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the MWC. St. Norbert moved to within one game of first place after Lake Forest lost at Illinois College. Lake Forest and Ripon are both 8-1 in the MWC. Carroll dropped to 9-8, 4-6.

Carroll held an 11-10 lead with 13 minutes 46 seconds left in the first half before St. Norbert would slowly start to pull away. The Green Knights went on an 8-0 run to take an 18-11 lead, getting hoops from Kristin Zimmerman, Emily Otzelberger, Rachel Hermus and Krista Pelky. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 21-17 with 5:14 left in the half, but the visitors went scoreless over the next 4:16 to end up trailing 29-21 at the half.

St. Norbert quickly built a 17-point lead at 39-22 early in the second half. Carroll would pull to within 45-35 with 7:49 to go, but would get no closer the rest of the way.

Denise Heuser led St. Norbert with 16 points, while Hermus added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Otzelberger chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds. St. Norbert shot 44.4 percent (20-for-45) from the floor, and cashed in on 24 of 38 free throws.

Carroll shot 21-for-62 (33.9 percent) from the floor. Janelle Groer led the Pioneers with 11 poitns, while Leah Lemke added 10.
